Welcome to Room 51 homepage.

Fifth grade is a year based on transition. It is a place where questions, ideas, and confidence can soar to create students that understand the joy and potential of learning.  We work to put the cap on foundational skills, and build the support and preparatory strategies to deal with the higher order learning students will face in the middle school experience.  Habits, patterns, and routines are essential to success in these areas.

Learning should be a safe, enriching experience that helps us grow and understand.  But there is work involved.  Some of the best lessons come from our mistakes and our confusion.  We will work hard this year to build the strategy base, the stamina, and the enjoyment of what learning has to offer.

My initial interests in education lied in college and graduate level work.  My first teaching experience was in a one room schoolhouse on the Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation.  This helped me understand the diversity of needs and the differentiation required to meet those needs.  It also helped shift my views more towards middle school education.  The more I realized the struggles and gaps there, the more interested I became in teaching the student as opposed to the content.  Fifth grade has become my favorite position in education.  I have been in Middleborough teaching fifth grade for over 11 years now and I continue to be excited about the potential understanding and possibility that exists at this level of education.

With all of the changes that are occurring in education these days, the ultimate goal remains the same, prepare the students for the transition to deeper content based learning, and build the strategies that will foster learning and success independently as well as cooperatively.

It is my pleasure to get to know and work with your children   As our goals are all the same, please feel free to contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns. The school number is 508-946-2045.   It is difficult to get to a phone during the day, but I will return any messages received as soon as possible.  You may also email me at
